2021 ANNUAL REPORT >

Our first annual report is a snapshot of our initiatives and activities that contributed to Vision Galveston’s mission in 2021.

Vision Galveston emerged in September 2018, a project to empower the Galveston Island community to define a vision for the future of the city. Over 8,500 people (representing 15 percent of Galveston’s diverse population) responded to a survey, attended interactive workshops, and met in small groups in homes, schools, and nonprofit organization offices. Their comments about what kind of city they wanted, and what needed to be done to realize their collective vision, were synthesized by nationally-recognized consultants into five broad vision statements and 78 recommendations.

Formally established in 2020, Vision Galveston is a 501c3 nonprofit “backbone organization” that supports aligning nonprofits, businesses, and government to actualize recommendations from our strategic plan.

Our bold, long-term plan incorporates our vision, strategy, and resulting recommended actions. The plan was informed by an intensive 9-month community engagement project, with a record-breaking 15% of Galvestonians providing recommendations. Our community—representative of the island’s socioeconomic diversity—offered their feedback, vision, and direction for Vision Galveston’s efforts to affect change.

As Christine Bryant writes in her chief executive’s message, “the generosity of area funders and the voices of thousands of residents were responsible for starting up Vision Galveston and developing our strategic plan.”

In 2021, we introduced our strategic initiatives—GREEN Galveston, BUILD Galveston, INCUBATE Galveston, and MEASURE Galveston. As our organization evolves, we will add other initiatives aligned with our plan and increasingly act on ways our island, residents, and workforce can thrive in a natural, social, and economic environment.

2021 was a year of planning, organizing, and progress. Although we’ll continue to rely on our residents for input and our funders for support, our start-up phase is now in our rearview mirror. 2022 will be one of action, acting on our collective vision for Galveston.
