Shield park revitalization
The redesign and redevelopment of Shield Park is an opportunity to make this vital community resource even more accessible and sustainable. Sports courts, including basketball courts, will be featured alongside family-oriented playgrounds and space for cultural programming like movies and concerts.
The park will be landscaped with ecologically beneficial rain gardens to capture and infiltrate rainfall. Native plants and pollinator gardens will support local ecosystems without draining resources, and large trees will provide shade in Galveston's summer heat.

Shield Park is a known brownfield site and was recently entered into TCEQ’s Voluntary Cleanup Program with help from our consultant partners at Adaapta. Further testing is being conducted, but a current Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives Document can be found on the City of Galveston’s Shield Park Website (link).
In June 2026, the EPA announced it has selected the City of Galveston to receive $2 million to remediate contamination at the park. Press release (Iink).
