What is a pop-up park(let)?
A “pop-up park,” is a small, temporary active space created in an underutilized public area to provide a gathering for the residents/citizens of an area. A “parklet” refers to small community spaces with public seating platforms that are built on sidewalks and extended into curbside parking spaces. A “pop-up parklet” is therefore Vision Galveston’s idea of combining the two structures into one, specifically for the residents of Galveston that live in what are known as “park deserts.”
why does galveston need one?
Park equity means making sure everyone in a community has good parks and green spaces they can easily get to. But on Galveston Island, some open areas aren’t really good for hanging out, playing, or having community events, and many people don’t have a park within a short five‑minute walk from their homes. This shows that parks aren’t shared fairly across the island. In the 2019 Vision Galveston Plan, goal number 30 says the community wants “quality parks within walking distance of every home,” which proves that people in Galveston really care about having better access to parks.
This pop‑up parklet can give Galveston the kind of park space people have been asking for. It’s a place where anyone—kids, older adults, and people with disabilities—can relax, play, and spend time together. It offers shade, green space, and places to sit, giving everyone a break from busy everyday life. And because it’s close enough to walk to, it helps to bring the 2019 community goal to life: having good parks within walking distance of every home!
Location of the Pop-up Park
