“The redesign and redevelopment of Jones Park is being undertaken by Vision Galveston in partnership with the City of Galveston and Better Parks for Galveston.  We have engaged the best teams to develop both playscapes and water mitigation strategies that will allow residents access to this green space which has historically flooded in light rain events.  This is not just replacing equipment, but a comprehensive approach to use both nature and technology to control the absorption and flow of rainfall. Of course, all of the effort is being driven by the voices and feedback from Galvestonians.”

Christine Bryant CEO Vision Galveston

Jones Park is a neighborhood park known for continually flooding and not meeting area residents’ needs. The pilot project’s redesign—to a modern, fully-accessible park—will serve as a proof of concept, a model for bringing more green space into Galveston’s urban core.

In July, 2021 redesign of the park started with the urban design architecture firm, Asakura Robinson. On October 19, 2021 Asakura Robinson, presented GREEN Galveston’s Action Team with a 15% design schematic for Jones Park’s environmental assessment. Throughout the remaining month, the Green Galveston Action Team incorporated community feedback into developing a 30% design schematic presented in December 2021. This deliverable represented the completion of phase 1 of the park’s redevelopment. In partnership with Better Parks for Galveston (Better Parks), GREEN Galveston engaged Parker Elementary students to inform Jones Park’s design. Students voiced their vision of a Jones Park through drawings and comments on their ideal park and play equipment. In March of 2022 at Parker Elementary there was a community engagement with Asakura Robinson where residents selected what they wanted at the park. The results of the engagement were presented in May of 2022, by the Family, Children, and Youth Board Infrastructure Task Commitee as well as issues pertaining to the city’s stormwater drainage.

In November of 2022, The Vision Galveston Board of Directors approved the funding for the continued design for Phase 2 of the project. In February of 2023, design continued incorporating water engineering. In May of 2023 a 60% design schematic was presented to community members with Asakura Robinson, Better Parks for Galveston, The City of Galveston, Family, Children, and Youth Board Infrastructure Task Commitee and Vision Galveston at Parker Elementary School. Design included water mitigation. In June 2023, water mitigation strategy received a preliminary approval from City of Galveston Engineering. In July 2024, 100% Design was completed by Asakura Robinson and presented to the City of Galveston and the Green Galveston Action Team, and 100% Construction Documents are COMPLETE as of July 2025!
