WHat is green galveston?

Green Galveston uses a framework of evidence-based principles and explicit input from the Galveston community to meaningfully develop and extend green spaces across the entire island, build resilient coasts, and create and expand opportunities for ecotourism and sustainable development. We work with communities to ensure that the 24 Green Galveston recommendations are met equitably to make a greener Galveston accessible to all the island’s residents, workforce, and visitors.

guiding principles

1. Right to Green: All Galvestonians have a right to the recreational, restorative, and social opportunities of high-quality parks and natural areas.

2. Green that Promotes Health: Galveston’s parks and open space should support the physical and mental health of the island’s residents.

3. Green that Supports the Local Ecology: Galveston’s parks and open space should respond to and support the local ecological, and environmental conditions of the island.

4. Green that Supports the Local Economy: Galveston's parks and open space should support local economic growth and development across the island.

5. Green that is Connected: Galveston’s parks and open space should be accessible for cyclists, pedestrians, residents utilizing public transportation, and through waterways.

6. Green that is Activated & Authentic: Galveston’s parks and open space should include programming and placemaking that reflect the cultures and histories of the Island.

7. Green that is Educational & Promotes Stewardship: Galveston’s parks and open space should provide immersive educational opportunities for residents that also support stewardship.

CenterPoint Energy Efficiency Upgrades

The average Galveston resident’s energy bill is 14% higher than the national average. An easy way to save money and energy is to maintain equipment and weatherize your home. Eligible Galveston residents can receive free A/C tune-ups and energy-efficiency upgrades. Visit our Energy Efficiency Programs page to learn more.

Jones park

Jones Park has been chosen as the pilot site for our green space initiatives, aimed at equitably expanding and improving green spaces in the city. The park, located at 71st St. and Jones Dr., is being redesigned with both playscapes and water mitigation strategies in mind since the park has historically flooded even after light rain. Learn about the project’s progress on the Jones Park page.

shield park

Park is a popular park in the historic Old Central Carver Park neighborhood, known for its basketball courts. Designs for the future park include sports courts, cultural programming, family-oriented playgrounds, and ecologically beneficial rain gardens, native plants, and large shade trees. Discover more about the park on the Shield Park page.
